About Phil Smart

Phil Smart at Coffee Lodge - Arusha, Tanzania in front of flowers in the sunshine

Phil grew up in Adelaide, South Australia. After completing school, he took up a carpentry apprenticeship and soon started a contracting business.

In the early seventies, while on a trip to Queensland, he discovered the sleepy coastal town of Noosa where he took up surfing. While sitting on the beach at the end of that day, he decided that he would go back to South Australia only long enough to sell everything and return to Noosa.

Phil eventually travelled from Noosa to Byron Bay, motivated by a connection to the ocean in his late 20's and into his 30's and eventually found himself in Brisbane when he decided to turn his eye to his career  where he pursued Real Estate and then later Marketing.

After building a number of successful businesses including a Human Resources Company which today employs thousands of fellow Australian's, Phil was able to enter into semi-retirement. He focuses mainly on community volunteering and mentoring entrepreneurs.

Now in his 70s, Phil has fulfilled his lifelong dream of  living in a coastal town near Brisbane with his wife and four children.

About Phil's stories

Phil has collected a wealth of knowledge over the years, learning from some of the worlds most influential people. It is his goal to one day write a collection of stories from his journey's around the world.

The Napoleon of Africa is a collection of knowledge and in part, personal stories from his time in Africa. "Black Mane" for example, is a real lion that  inspired the story from the book.

Phil found the lion resting under an acacia tree and had the same look of unashamed power and command as described in the novel. He is pictured to the right.
